Police find illegal drugs and guns in dawn raid in Drekikir

Illegal drugs and guns have been found by Police in a dawn raid in a village in the Drekikir District of the East Sepik Province.

East Sepik Provincial Police Commander Superintendent Christopher Tamari said police arrested two men who allegedly had in their possession a huge quantity of marijuana and guns last Friday.

Mr Tamari said the drugs were neatly packed and believed to be ready for transportation to Vanimo and then to Jayapura in Indonesia.

The house police raided was in Musungwil village, Drekikir District.

PPC Tamari said a third suspect escaped while two were caught inside the house with the offensive weapons and drugs.

“I am pleased with the police officers who worked hard and apprehended the suspects involved. Drug and gun smuggling in East Sepik had been on the rise in recent times.

“Police, acting upon information gathered from various sources, planned a perfect dawn raid which resulted in the capture of the suspects and the recovery of the packed drug and guns which were ready to be transported,” Mr Tamari said.

PPC Tamari said the suspect who had been caught will be interrogated and will be charged accordingly. He said they will be charged under the amended drug and firearms acts for which the penalties are very high.

Mr Tamari said the weapons included two homemade guns and wire catapults.

“I want to warn the people of East Sepik not to trade in illegal guns and drugs. You will be caught, and the penalties are harsh, and now includes life imprisonment,” PPC Tamari said.

He said that since he is from West Sepik and is the current police boss of East Sepik he will have a greater advantage to get information about the illegal trade going on between the two provinces. This will also help police to apprehend people who are involved in the illegal trade.
