Developing hostage situation

The Royal Papua New Guinea (RPNGC) is responding to confirmed reports of a number of hostages being held by armed criminals in the vicinity of Fogoma’iu village at the border of Southern Highlands, and Hela provinces near Western province.

Deputy Police Commissioner Philip Mitna said a number of foreign citizens are among the group, which includes academics and a number of local guides.

Deputy Commissioner Mitna has confirmed that contact is being maintained with the relevant High Commissions as this matter unfolds.

Dr Mitna said the armed criminals, reportedly from Komo in the Hela province, were returning from Kamusie when they sighted the victims and took them hostage.

Dr Mitna said initial demands from the criminals had included a demand for cash. The RPNGC is negotiating with the criminals through an intermediary and are treating the matter as a serious incident.

Deputy Commissioner Mitna gave an assurance that the authorities, including police and local villagers are working around the clock to ensure the safe release of those held hostage.
